Dolac is the largest, most famous and most important market in Zagreb. The market was opened in 1930 at the site of old walls which were demolished. The Market is located in the quarter Upper Town – Medveščak, between Ban Josip Jelačić Square, Kaptol and the Upper Town. It is a combination of an open (fruit and vegetables) and closed (meat and fish) market. In 2006, a statue of a traditional market seller, the “Kumica”, was installed at the market. The Kumicas are the women from the surrounding regions who grow their own fruit and vegetables or make homemade cheese and cream, which are then sold at the market.
