Zagreb’s Baroque temple of art was erected in 1895 and today houses the Croatian National Theatre. The Neo-Baroque National Theatre is a masterpiece of late Historicism by architects Ferdinand Fellner of Austria and Hermann Helmer of Germany. The National Theatre has hosted numerous international artists such as Franz Liszt, Sarah Bernhardt, Franz Lehar, Richard Strauss, Gerard Philipe, Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier, Jean-Louis Barrault, Peter Brook, Mario del Monaco, Jose Carreras and many others.
